After the recent passing of esteemed songwriter Leonard Cohen, I wanted to share this song, To Leonard with you. I co-wrote this track with New Zealand author Chris Canning as a part of a project called Song For Leonard, during a stormy week on Waiheke Island, NZ.
'The songbook/film/music for ‘A Song for Leonard’ are now in development. To find out more about the project and stay updated click here
So many star performers died before their 28th birthdays during the Seventies that a myth developed in which it became accepted that the talent or 'genius' which had been a feature of their young lives (Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Mama Cass, Jim Morrison et al) had been a special gift of youth subject to a tragic time expiry date. Death allowed their talents to be preserved at that point in time thus ensuring that it would be enshrined undiminished for ever.
In reality their deaths were more the result of their inability to handle the excesses afforded by the freedoms of the age.
This is the story of Susanne Finch whose life appeared to carry that tragic time expiry date also … until she began to live again through the music that had not died with her.
